Aosta Aosta Amphitheater
The Heart of History
The Aosta Amphitheater is one of the most important relics of Roman times in the Aosta Valley.
It is an elliptical building that could seat about 15,000 spectators, more than the initial population of the city founded in 25 B.C. as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum. The structure of the Amphitheater The Amphitheater measured 86 meters in the north-south direction and 73 in the east-west direction.
It consisted of 60 arches resting on half-columns of Tuscanic order, which formed two tiers and two tiers of tiers. The arena was below ground level and could be flooded for water games.
There is no evidence of subterranean environments. The dating of the Amphitheater It is unclear whether the Amphitheater was built along with the rest of the city or at a later time.
The fact that it is included within the walls would suggest the former hypothesis, but the stylistic features of the rusticated ashlar used for the facing did not become widespread until the first century AD. It is therefore assumed that the building was built under the Julio-Claudian empire. The Amphitheater Today, only eight arches of the northwest section of the Amphitheater remain visible, incorporated into the convent of the nuns of St. Joseph, and some portions of the supporting structures in the lawn behind.
In order to visit the structure, one must ask the nuns who live in the convent.
The Amphitheater is an Italian national monument and part of the cultural heritage of the Aosta Valley.
