Grolla or friendship cup?<\/h2>\n\n

Friendship Cup <\/strong>should not be confused with Grolla<\/strong>, another typical and very famous craft product in the Aosta Valley. <\/p>\n\n

The Grolla <\/strong>is a wine goblet <\/strong>carved from a piece of fine wood<\/strong>, made on a lathe <\/strong>and decorated by hand<\/strong>, a symbol of <\/strong> friendship<\/strong>, family <\/strong>and fraternity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

In the past, the Grolla<\/strong> served as a cup for convivial drinking<\/strong>, a ritual that dates back to ancient times and is still practiced only on specific occasions in the present day. <\/p>\n\n

Today, in fact, this craft item<\/strong> is mostly used as a jewelry holder <\/strong>and as an ornament.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The Friendship Cup <\/strong>is equally sought after and is a symbolic object <\/strong>ofcraftsmanship in the Aosta Valley.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

This is an elaboration of the traditional wooden bowl<\/strong>, but this time equipped with two handles<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Compared to the Grolla, the Friendship Cup <\/strong>is lower, capacious, and pot-bellied, characterized by the presence of spouts<\/strong> on the sides and a finely carved lid <\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

The ancient tradition of the Friendship Cup: the “Valdostana Coffee”<\/h2>\n\n

According to tradition, the Friendship Cup <\/strong>is used to drink <\/strong> “Valdostan-style coffee”<\/strong> in good company <\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

It is a local drink <\/strong>invented in the mists of time to “warm the ears” with friends on cold winter nights.<\/p>\n\n

The preparation of “Valdostana-style coffee” <\/strong>consists of pouring coffee corrected with grappa<\/strong>, lemon zest<\/strong>, sugar <\/strong>and plenty of spices<\/strong> inside the Friendship Cup<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

The rim of the cup should be sprinkled with more sugar<\/strong> and more grappa<\/strong>.\nAfter that, flame <\/strong>the rim and wait until the sugar has caramelized before serving the flaming coffee. <\/p>\n\n

At this point, the Friendship Cup <\/strong>is ready and is passed around as a sign of friendship<\/strong>, passing it from hand to hand, without laying it on the table.\nIn this way, everyone receives their ration of “Valdostan coffee,”<\/strong> very often even more than once. <\/p>\n\n

It never happens that we always sip coffee from the same spout, but this does not turn out to be a problem, on the contrary.\nIt is precisely this that creates a stronger friendship<\/strong>, greater togetherness <\/strong>and intense involvement<\/strong> in the practice of the ritual. <\/p>\n\n

Le Tournage<\/a> ‘s craftsmanship in the Aosta Valley: from workshop to customer<\/h2>\n\n

The origins<\/strong> ofhandicrafts <\/strong>in the Aosta Valley<\/strong> go back to the frequent needs of the Alpine population to make various tools for use at home and at work. <\/p>\n\n

Over time,Valdostan craftsmanship<\/strong> has differed in a variety of areas and in all its most diverse expressions. It has gradually led to the emergence and development of multiple personal ways of working with wood<\/strong>, iron<\/strong>, soapstone<\/strong> and textiles<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n
