The production of wild seedlings in the Aosta Valley: Da Emy<\/a> Farm<\/h2>\n\n

That of Emilia Berthod<\/a> <\/strong>is a small business that revolves around mountain seedlings. Emilia<\/a> is the owner of Da Emy’s<\/a> Mountain Medicinal Plant Cultivation<\/strong> Farm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Production is predominantly of Artemisia Umbelliformis<\/strong>(G\u00e9n\u00e9py<\/strong>), arnica<\/strong>, yarrow millefeuillea<\/strong>, mountain celery<\/strong>, imperatoria<\/strong>, horsetail<\/strong>, and St. John’s Wort.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

His company’s flagship product is G\u00e9n\u00e9py<\/strong>, marketed both as a plant<\/strong> and as a liqueur<\/strong>, plain and white, created while maintaining the traditional recipe. <\/p>\n\n

Emilia<\/a> grows her beloved seedlings in a field near her home in the hamlet of Bois de Clin<\/strong> in Valsavarenche<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

In fact, all of its activity takes place within the beautiful protected territory of the Gran Paradiso National Park<\/strong>, at more than 1,400 meters above sea level<\/strong>, complete with the corresponding seal of quality.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The company headed by Emilia Berthod<\/a><\/strong> officially came to life in 2002<\/strong>, after reading an ad in L’Informatore Agricolo<\/em><\/strong> of the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

They were looking for a person to follow an experimental cultivation<\/strong> of Artemisia umbelliformis<\/em><\/strong>.\n“I liked the idea of working the land<\/em>,” says Emy<\/a> <\/strong>– and to embark on a new experience.<\/em> I jumped into the adventure with enthusiasm: the first year I had been given two hundred g\u00e9n\u00e9py seedlings, and already by the next year I decided to put in ten thousand!<\/em>” <\/p>\n\n

After 16 years of trading only dried seedlings, daughter Ambra Tomasoni <\/strong>joined the business in 2018 <\/strong>, taking care of herb processing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Emy<\/a> <\/strong>and her daughter Ambra <\/strong>have an extraordinary passion for their land and valley. <\/p>\n\n

Cultivation of mountain seedlings<\/h2>\n\n

Herb cultivation in the high mountains is not for everyone.<\/p>\n\n

If we look at the company’s flagship product Emy’s<\/a><\/strong>, namely the g\u00e9n\u00e9py<\/strong>, we find that it is not at all easy to grow and moreover there is no long tradition behind it. <\/p>\n\n

Yet, Emilia<\/a>, manages to do it very well and every year produces and offers for sale large quantities of dried g\u00e9n\u00e9py seedlings.<\/p>\n\n

“Yes, the work is not easy,\u2016<\/em> explains Emy<\/a> <\/strong>– most of the work is done between April and July, and during the fall weeding is done by hand.\nBut being in such a beautiful place is priceless.\nI work in Valsavarenche, in the Gran Paradiso National Park, high in the mountains.\nWhen I look up while I am in the fields I see the chamois and marmots <\/em>“.<\/p>\n\n
